5th Water Conference, 2014
Water in the Alps - and beyond: Adapting alpine and mountain
river basins to climate change
The Water Conference was born to spread the results of the activities devoted to water management in the framework of the Alpine Convention (a multilateral treaty signed in 1991). Water management has an important role among Alpine Convention activities and represents one of the crucial factors for sustainable development within the whole Alpine region.
The Water Conference represents a welcome occasion to share the results of the studies that the Water Platformof the Alpine Convention (created during the X Alpine Conference) has performed up until now, also in cooperation with the Natural Hazards Platform (PLANALP). It will also disseminate outcomes of and lessons learned from the activities on adaptation to climate change in transboundary basins, implemented under the Water Convention since 2007.
The UNECE Water Convention (adopted in 1992 and entered into force in 1996) includes almost all countries sharing transboundary waters in the region of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It was recently amended to also allow accession by countries outside the UNECE region. It requires Parties to prevent, control and reduce transboundary impact, use transboundary waters in a reasonable and equitable way and ensure their sustainable management.
The 5th Water Conference is intended to provide – to a wide public of experts, administrators, practitioners and stakeholders – the state of the art, the best practices and the main findings on adaptation to climate change in transboundary river basins in mountain areas.
Different panels of experts will present the main results of recent activities under the respective conventions, in the European Territorial Cooperation project and in other important international organizations.
The 5th Water Conference will be organized and promoted by the Alpine Convention in cooperation with the UNECE Water Convention, to favour the creation of synergies and the exchange of experiences (i.e. among the Alpine territory, the Carpathians, the Cau
